The Moross House – A Rich History of Artistic Passion
EWK had the distinct honor of participating in the historic rehabilitation of the Moross House, which is the oldest brick dwelling in Detroit.
The incredible space has been transformed into the Schinkel Fine Art studio, and the Detroit Secret Garden. In addition to a trending art studio, this space also acts as a private event space so our artists knew they wanted a top-of-the-line kitchen featuring both aesthetics and function. Challenge accepted!
Given the age of the dwelling, it did take a significant effort to make the space functional and bring it back to its high potential aesthetic. We knew we had to begin with Ayr Custom Cabinetry as the bones of the historic home were not exactly square. As with many historic homes, the room sizes were quite small, which meant removing walls to open up larger and more open space.
The urban yet natural setting of the home helped solidify the color scheme as well as materials. Red oak cabinetry was selected with a deep onyx stain. To amplify the organic feel of this home a honed marble was selected for both the countertop and the backsplash. By honing the marble, the top appears more natural and less reflective than its polished counterparts.
This kitchen has been tricked out with all the amenities to host viewing parties and other private events. Caterers will love the concealed dishwasher, functional Galley workstation, speed oven and loads of roll out trays, cutlery inserts and storage options. The double beverage drawers and hidden bourbon station can easily stay stocked whenever the need to celebrate arises.
The Moross home sits at the intersection of old world and the 21st century and we are thrilled to have had a part of its incredible history. To see more of this incredible space, check out the Schinkel Fine Art Studio.
